We’ve all heard of the 80/20 rule in business. It states these commonly held truths: 80% of sales come from 20% of key customers; 80% of profits come from 20% of products. Managers also like to say that 80% of the work is done by 20% of employees. Back in 2010, Comtran embraced the 80/20 rule to refocus our Sales and Manufacturing efforts. In addition to maintaining our solid base of commercial cable products, we have balanced our portfolio with a growing array of specialty cable products designed for harsh environments.
In the manufacturing facility, we have created cellular production zones, dedicated to lean manufacturing for each specific product type — commercial or specialty cable. “This allows us to support those 20% who are our key, high-volume customers,” says Comtran’s Robert Auger, Vice President of Operations. “Of course, we still serve our low volume customers,” says Auger. “But by fine-tuning the plant floor, staff assignments, and standard operating procedures, we are able to better balance and optimize the company’s resources.”
