PRESS RELEASE: Comtran Expands into LED Lighting for Transit

Attleboro, MA – Comtran Cable announces a partnership with G&G Special Environments to launch waterproof LED lighting for rail transit. When G&G (aka G&G LED) was looking for low voltage cable to power their new UL wet-listed LED lighting, they sought out Comtran’s engineers for an equally robust cable to power it.

In order to be approved by the New York City Transit Authority (NYCT) for underground installation, both the lighting and power cable must be resistant to moisture. In 2012, Super Storm Sandy deluged underground rail lines, and the ongoing rebuild included stringent safeguards against future damage. With both the LED lighting and power cable meeting NFPA 130 and NYCT specifications, the product qualifies for Amtrak’s multi-year Hudson River Tunnel Project.

Thriving on Challenge
Comtran is well established in specialty rail transit cable with their Hub-LINK™ line of data communications cable. It has been installed in several New York City subway stations, including the stunning World Trade Center PATH transportation hub. Hub-LINK™ is part of the BART expansion in San Francisco and is approved for the new driverless light rail line in Honolulu.

Moving into the lighting market has been exciting for Comtran. Working in collaboration with G&G LED, Comtran developed and qualified a UL wet-rated Hub-LINK™ low voltage lighting cable in record time – only five months! According to Joe Barry, Comtran’s General Manager, the accelerated timeline is par for the course in their R&D group. “Our engineers thrive on challenge,” says Barry. “Plus, their interaction with those G&G inventors was fun to watch. I guess great minds do think alike.”

Paulette Blagburn is Comtran’s Design Engineer responsible for the LED low voltage lighting cable. She says the cable’s rugged construction is a spinoff of proven Hub-LINK™ components. “We used cross-linked primary insulation and a proprietary LSZH extruded polyolefin jacket to ensure high resistance to fluids and conformance to NFPA 130.”

Comtran expects their new Hub-LINK™ low voltage lighting cable to be installed in a wide range of underground transit applications: new and rebuilt bridges, tunnels, walkways, and passenger platforms. Available in 1- and 2-pair, 18 AWG, 16 AWG, and 14 AWG sizes.
